Allele frequency

Allele frequency | (Gene frequency). The occurrence of a specific allele in a population in relation to other alleles of that gene at the same locus. Allele frequency (gene frequency) is typically expressed as a fraction, percentage or decimal and represents the number of times the allele of interest is observed in a population in relation to the total number of copies of all alleles at a specific genetic locus in the population. Allele frequencies change over time and are indicators of genetic drift or new mutations arising in a population. (see also The Hardy-Weinberg Principle).
